Blog Archive Beyond the MBA Classroom MBA Games at Ross When you select an MBA program, you are not just choosing your learning environment, but are also making a commitment to a community. Each Thursday, we offer a window into life “beyond the MBA classroom” at a top business school. Just after the Ross Leadership Initiative (the University of Michigans Ross School of Businesss week-long orientation for incoming students) and about a week after classes start, sections go head-to-head in a series of field competitions known as the MBA Games. Although these games take place early in the academic year, the new class of students has already spent orientation and the first week of classes together, so sections have developed initial bonds, and the competition is fierce. The games kick off with Shout Off, a cheering competition between sections that is sponsored by SC Johnson. In addition to bragging rights for the rest of the winning section’s time at Ross, a financial gain is also on the line: the winning team wins funds for a section happy hour. Sections then compete in a variety of sports activities that have been organized by second years, including soccer, an obstacle course and tug-of-war. These events also are sponsored by companies who donate generous prizes , such as free massages and gift cards.
